The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords never to demand a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.
This comes soon after NSFAS received reports about some accommodation vendors who require NSFAS-funded students to pay a deposit or top-up payment as a way to get entry to the permitted private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation suppliers of the compulsory conditions, as furnished by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement involving the non-public accommodation companies and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS explained in a statement on Thursday.
The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states the lease will likely be paid out month to month into the accommodation company (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf of your lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance using the NSFAS terms and conditions for personal accommodation suppliers’ participation on the student accommodation portal.
"The lessor may not need or permit the lessee to pay a deposit, top-up payments, or another types of payment on the lessor, or almost every other person in connection with this agreement, which includes payment of rent, while awaiting payment from NSFAS. The NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation companies’ nsfas eligibility criteria participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded on account of an incorrect choice by NSFAS, the more info scholar will not be accountable for payment of any arrear rent to the accommodation provider, up right up until the date of being defunded."
